Only 334 days until Christmas

Wow, is January over already? Only 12 hours left...

Had a good 3-day trip that took us through California. This week was much calmer and drier than last week, so it was enjoyable. These photos are from Redmond last week. We landed with a 30+ knot crosswind--the airplane was sideways. Look at that windsock sticking straight out! I always have to land in those conditions, since I'm the Captain. It was challenging, but we did it safely and without too much excitement. I took a photo of the low altimeter setting--and found out later that it was a record low! Normally, the altimeter averages just above or just below 29.92. 29.00 is LOW! Hurricanes aren't much lower! If you aren't a pilot, look right about the middle of the picture, then all the way to the right. It says "29.00 in" The stack of numbers above it is the altimeter. We set the altimeter setting to calibrate the altimeter, so that we know the exact elevation. Redmond is about 3075 feet. The "5000" above it is our altitude alterter--that's the altitude that we had set in case we didn't land--we would have climbed up to 5000' in order to be safely above terrain. The picture below is of the displays in front of me. To the left is my primary display, and to the right is my multi-function display, which shows a map overview of where we are, how long it will take to get to the next fix, how fast we are going and what the temperature is outside. It was 4C (38F) in Redmond. We did a long overnight in Ontario this week, and I got to see my Auntie Jeannie and cousin Denise. They drove out to have breakfast with me--one of the perks of the job is getting to see people more often.

Denise has lost 60 lbs since last Christmas--WOW, she looks fantastic! She did it by changing her diet a little--cutting out things no-one can pronounce, eating more veggies and leaner meats, using smaller plates for more realistic, healthier serving sizes, and walking a lot. She's up to 4-6 miles a day, including a lot of uphill walks.

Auntie Jeannie looks fantastic too! She is so beautiful, inside and out. I wish my personality were more like hers--she's always calm and accepting. She also gives the best hugs of anyone I've ever met! Everything is better after one of Auntie Jeannie's hugs!We saw the Sky Crane practicing touch and goes in Medford. This helicoptor picks up a big box of water, then carries and dumps it on forest fires, and also stocks lakes with baby fish.Allegiant pulled up next to us with their Blue Man airplane. I don't like the Blue Man group. I don't like anything expressionless--mimes, clowns, and blue men. This BBJ belongs to an Internet bigwig in California. Because of CA taxes, it is cheaper for him to base the airplane in Medford, then fly his pilot up to get it to bring it back to CA to pick him up. I love the paint job on this plane! On Friday night the moon was full, with Mars by its side. The moon is the closest it will be for the next 3 years, and because of its position it was 30% brighter than it normally is. It lit up our flight deck--I didn't have to use internal lighting to see charts! It was also good for making shadow animals... Hope you've put January to good use, and met your New Year's Resolutions thus far. I have--still going to yoga, and still haven't had stitches, crutches or surgery! Good job so far!

Bring on the Bull Riders!

Trish & I went to Stock Show Saturday night. First thing she spotted was her honey, Ross Coleman. Ross is a PBR bull rider and makes Trish weak in the knees! He IS pretty cute, isn't he? So, we decided that our mission was to find ourselves some cowboys! Preferably not ones made of pixels.Well, I found something. A cowboy? Nope...I found a horse. This is Star. I almost bought her. "Almost" meaning that I was practically writing the check. However, I have two good horses, and that money could mean the difference in Ranger's care right now, so it wasn't fair to buy her. Still, she was a really nice filly. Maybe next year. Then again, as Trish said, I only have one butt--and two horses. Do I really need three??? (The correct answer is "yes")This morning, Margaret got up at 4:15am and Trish got up at 4:30a. I got up at 5:30a because I am lazy and don't really care about my make-up...but I did make coffee and breakfast burritos for the girls, so that I could feed them at 6:15 when they arrived. We planned to be at Stock Show by 6:30am for the 7:00a start of Versatility Ranch Horse cutting, since last year I got there at 8:30 and missed the whole darn thing. Not this year! Nope, not me!So we got there at o-god-thirty, before the break of dawn, and guess what? THEY WERE DOING RANCH TRAIL!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAACCCCCCKKKKKK! We got up at WHAT TIME??? to be there in time for cutting?????? Where the @#$%@ are the @#$^%&ing COWS????

Still, we got to see Cody Crow on his nice mare....And we all fell in love with this grey stallion, Pistol. Margaret wants to breed Lexi to him. I'm going to steal the foal when she does! So, while it's fascinating to watch horses trot over poles and drag logs around, we also found time to visit. We spotted Gerrie Barnes and hung out with her.Gerrie insisted on taking this photo. We were pre-coffee. Can you tell? That's Karen from the barn with us. She was smart and slept in till 7am.There was an hour break between trail and cutting, so we went to find food. We found Wylie Peterson, a PBR cowboy, instead. Wylie is a hottie, and boy can he ride a bull! The guy at the BBQ place, Gustavo, wanted some hugs too! So, I'm making him a star of the blog!Cutting started promptly at 11a, or 12n, or sometime around then. Certainly not at 7am AS ADVERTISED!!!!! Causing us to be up at an ungodly hour...not that we are upset....or sleep-deprived....

I'm including this blurry photo because this stud looks so much like Beau that it's uncanny.
Holly Major is blurry because she and the cow are moving so fast. Look at the banners--they are in focus! Her horse is a good cutting horse. I think she came in 2nd or 3rd.
Wow, now that's a cut! Go, Holly, Go!
Pistol, our handsome stallion, cut and penned his cow perfectly. He won the class!
Then came the PBR finals. 35 cowboys in two phases, with the top 15 in the short go. Again, these photos might look blurry, but that's how fast the bulls are moving. This cowboy got dumped, and the bullfighter is already moving in to distract the bull--see the cowboy's teal chaps to the left of the bull? He's on the ground.
They've just pulled the gate for this bullrider. He's just a blur--wow, imagine the power!
Cute little Brian Cantor, my hottie, is lashing down his riding hand with the bull rope.
Buck, baby, buck!
Once in a while you come up with a fantastic photo--look at his chaps--they are just a blur! Everything is moving except his hat! Might have to blow this up and frame it.
The six hitch team came in during intermission. Check out the bald-faced horse in the back, on the left. He was laughing!
Back to bull riding--this kid thought it was pretty scary and noisy!
Then it was Wylie's turn. One, two...three....you're off! He almost got his oil checked by that bull! Thank God for the bull fighters!
Then it was Kody Lostroh's turn. Kody is a Colorado cowboy and a hometown favourite.
Ride 'em cowboy! and he did, ultimately winning the Championship! 259.5 points--great job, Kody!
Flint Rassmussen is everyone's favourite bullfighter. He's been doing this 25 years. He's the best of the best...even when he is dancing like Michael Jackson!
Oh, boy, is that bull bucking hard or what!
This is one of the scariest times in bull-riding. The cowboy is hung up in the bull rope--can you see him off the bull's right side--he's the green thing that looks like a rag doll. The bull fighter is trying to get the bull rope and the flank strap off so that the bull will stop bucking and spinning. Cowboys can get shoulders dislocated and arms broken with spiral fractures at the best, and broken necks or killed at the worst. They got him off quickly, and he was fine.
How's that for balance?
Ooops, no score...and once again the bull fighter saves the cowboy. That was one nasty bull--check out how he's trying to hook the bull fighter. This is the one that almost got away. The safety riders rope the bulls that don't go straight for the exit gate. Bulls can jump the fences up into the bleachers easily, and often do. They're already mad, and a bunch of screaming, panicking people only pisses them off more. This is my favourite part of bull riding--bull rider butts!
Back to Stock Show tomorrow for the VRH finals, and for a new pair of chaps!

Marvel the Mustang...and marvel the mess

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ZGKhwTeFk
Check that out--it's a :29 second video. You can probably guess that it was my fav when I was little.

Speaking of marvels, it's a marvel that this mess was ever cleaned up!Those are my Christmas ornaments. I downsized some more, and about 1/3 of them are finding new homes...

And speaking of messes, which mess should I get myself into? This one:Or this one?In the meantime, it's -5*F here. THAT'S COLD! My hottie neighbor helped me run an extension cord so that I could plug in the truck. It might not start in the morning, and I've got to go to work at 6:45a. Hope we get a heatwave of -3 or better!

And in the rest of the meantime, stupid Facebook is sucking ALL of my time away! Now I know what heroin must feel like--you think you can, but you can't stop!

Hope your new year is going well--mine is good so far--no injuries, no surgery. 7 days and counting! That's my only goal for 2010!

Resistance is Futile...

I joined Facebook. Not sure how I feel about having myself splattered all over the internet, with all sorts of people able to find me. There are a lot of people with whom I'm not in touch for a reason--do I really want them to find me? What do you do when someone you don't want in your life finds you on facebook?

Odette made a little window pop up and it scared me half to death, but we could email instantly. It was pretty cool! I think that's instant messaging, but I'm not sure.

I am sure that I miss stamps. When is the last time you received a hand written letter? Or sent one?

In more interesting news, I rode Ranger again today. I asked him for a nice extended trot and he transitioned to a right-lead canter--and it was one of the nicest transitions I've had in over a year. So, I decided to ask for a left-lead canter. We've had a lot of trouble with that--tail-swishing, ear-pinning, teeth-gritting, some bucking and some bolting. It's been hurting him to go left.

So, I asked, and got the ears, tail and teeth. After a stride or two, his ears came up and he gave a surprised grunt, so I slowed to a trot and asked again...and got the nicest transition! I could hear him yelling "IT DOESN'T HURT, WOW, IT DOESN'T HURT!" in his head! We would have scored HIGH in a dressage test!

I rode Beau, too, and he did a fabulous job. He sure likes to canter and gallop now that he realizes that he can step off from his hind end, and can carry himself correctly. It's taken 6 years to get to this point! He's become an absolute delight to ride. I sure wish that his previous owners had trained him for something--he would have made a terrific jumper--he's got fantastic natural form and scope. He's also VERY fast. His dam, Melody Maker, was a race horse. I wonder if Beau would have been good on a track... We'll never know. However, I think I'm going to take him to another novice show this spring, and see if we can't earn some AQHA points. He deserves to have something in his name that recognizes what a talented, wonderful horse he is.

Went to yoga tonight. I had no idea I was that tight and that stressed. Now I'm really sore from stretching out and loosening up, but it's a "good" sore. Can there really be a "good" sore?

I'm going to be in LA on the 30th, and Melissa, Dean, Greg and Mark WON'T! Now, how's that for luck? Better not go to Vegas this week. I'll be in El Paso for NY's and Martha WON'T! I might want to stay out of the way of meteors and Mack trucks, too!

Yes, Karen, there is a Santa Claus

Merry Christmas!

I don't think that I'm one of those people who asks God or Santa Claus for much. Mostly, I just ask that people I love are taken care of, especially when they are hurting.

As you know, Ranger has been injured for over 4 months. We didn't know--didn't think--he'd ever be rideable again, due to the broken bone in his leg.

We've been religiously following his rehab and physical therapy regime, and Dr. Olds said that if he doesn't show any signs of lameness, I could try riding him again.

So, THANK YOU God and Santa, for hearing my prayers and answering my wishes today. I think he was as excited as I was--he grabbed his bit from my hands, and stood like a rock for me to get on. I think he's missed riding as much as I have. I don't know what the future will hold for Ranger; he could end up lame again, because we don't know whether or not the sound wave therapy is making any difference. Time will answer that question.

But, for today, I got the one Christmas wish I've asked for every single year, since I was a tiny little girl--I got my pony. And tonight, he's OK.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, and to all a good night!

Christmas, Airline Style

Well, this is a pretty good ending to the year...look what arrived yesterday! My armoire! It only took them SEVEN MONTHS (!!!!!) to repair it! But, it's home.Airline people never have holidays on the holiday. We're always flying you to Grandma's house, or home to see your folks. Even better this year, I got to fly a bunch of our military personnel home to see their families. I announced it every flight, and each time the entire airplane erupted in cheers, no matter how delayed we were. Passengers really stepped up to thank our service members for thier commitment and sacrifice.

Trish is going to CA to see her family, so we had Christmas dinner last night. I roasted a duck, made mashed potatoes, greeen beans, foccaccia bread and pumpkin pie. We had a bottle of wine that I got in Montana. Everything was excellent, if I say so myself!

We also exchanged gifts. I got Trish a new helmet, and a pair of slightly fuzzy slippers...Trish got me a globe, Susan Boyle's CD, and stuffed my stocking full of chocolate and other delectable goodies! Kalisha got a couple of balls and a mousie that moves!Trish also got me this hilarious Ranger & Beau ornament-And Santa with an airplane--and the propeller spins!I wanted to share more of my decorations with you. This is my tree. The Angel has topped our tree almost all of my life. I don't remember a Christmas when she wasn't up there. Many of the above ornaments have also been on my tree all my life. The angel in the blue drop is part of a set of musical angels with mostly stringed instruments. The cotton snow is still intact. She is playing a violin, but there is also a harp, cello and flute.

The blown glass ornament in the lower center is from Germany, again, part of a set.

The little triangular manger scene at the top center has been around forever, and is probably my favourite ornament. It's simply Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, with a star above. Simple, yet everything.

My nativity scene fits beautifully on the new oak table. Do you have plans for Christmas Eve? I'm going to go to a candlelight service, then come home, light candles, put on Christmas music and read the Christmas verses aloud, which I do every year. Tomorrow I'll open the rest of my gifts--Thank you Mary and Margaret!

What are your traditions?

I wish you the merriest of Christmases, surrounded by those you love.
